Hydro Agricultural Development Of South Lebanon Irrigation And Water Supply Scheme / CONVEYOR 800 - Contract Section 2 / Contract Section 3
Country: Lebanon
Location within country: South Lebanon & Bekaa
Client: Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR)
Financed by: KFAED & AFESD
Scope of Work
Dubbed Conveyor 800 (the project) supplies over 90 villages and approximately 15.000 ha of potentially productive farmland with water from the nearby Litany River and Qaraoun Dam.
When complete, the project will bring 110 million m3 of water a year from the Litany River – the nation's largest source of fresh water – over territory held in foreign occupation for over two decades.
The Conveyor 800 itself is a series of tunnels, pressurized pipelines and open canals in what the water travels – tunnels, pipelines or canals is determined by topography and hydraulics and is designed using sophisticated software such as ISIS and Surge to make necessary calculations.
The overall Main Conveyor 800 Project includes approximately 52 km long Main Conveyor 800, from the headworks arrangement at the existing Markabe Tunnel to the Chaqra Secondary Conveyor offtake point , together with some 60 km of secondary conveyors (both gravity and pumped) to transport the water to the head of the individual irrigation perimeters. This includes the necessary hydraulic structures such as offtakes, regulating structures, pressure breaks, pump stations, reservoirs etc.
The Works of Contract Section 2 comprise:
- the 6.9 m wide Qelia Canal, altogether some 7.5 km long, including the Intake Structure, Intermediate Regulator, End Structure and three piped siphons;
- the Main Conveyor pipeline sections between the end of the Qelia Canal and the Chaqra Offtake, altogether some 35.5 km long, varying from twin DN 1700 to single DN 1400 GRP and steel pipes and pressure ratings between PN 10 and PN 40, including all valve structures and minor works;
- the Main Conveyor Markaba Tunnel 1 and Markabe Tunnel 2 sections, altogether 1.2 km long, concrete-lined with an internal diameter of 2.20 m; (To be done by a Third Party)
- the Secondary Conveyor pipeline sections, altogether some 19 km long, varying from DN 900 to DN 300 GRP, DI and steel pipes and pressure ratings between PN 10 and PN 40;
- the Houla Break Pressure Tank and the Majdel Selm Break Pressure Tank, with net operational storage volumes of some 900 m3 and 600 m3 respectively;
- the 9 reinforced concrete terminal reservoirs, with a combined net operational storage volume of some 46,000 m3;
- the 5 earth embankment terminal reservoirs, with a combined net operational storage volume of some 70,000 m3;
- the Chaqra Pump Station, with a design capacity of 0.24 m3/s, including pump sump and associated buildings;
- All associated access roads, access adits, portals, appurtenances and ancillary structures.

The Works of Contract Section 3 comprise:
- the Main Secondary Conveyor pipeline sections between the end of the Main Conveyor pipeline (at the Chaqra Offtake) and the Yarine 1 Reservoir, altogether some 20.5 km long, varying from DN 2000 to DN 400 GRP, DI and steel pipes and pressure ratings between PN 10 and PN 40, including all valve structures and minor works;
- the Main Secondary Conveyor Et Tiri Tunnel section, 2.0 km long, concrete-lined with an internal diameter of 2.00 m; (To be done by a Third Party)
- the Secondary (branch) Conveyor pipeline sections, altogether some 11.5 km long, varying from DN 900 to DN 300 GRP and DI pipes and pressure ratings between PN 10 and PN 25;
- the 5 reinforced concrete terminal reservoir and balancing tank structures, with a combined net operational storage volume of some 28,000 m3;
- the 2 earth embankment terminal reservoirs, with a combined net operational storage volume of some 21,000 m3;
- the three Bent Jbail Pump Stations 1, 2 and 3, with design capacities of 0.72 m3/s, 0.51 m3/s and 0.08 m3/s respectively, including pump sumps and associated buildings;
- all associated access roads, access adits, portals, appurtenances and ancillary structures.
